| Gypsy Fusion Bellydance with Dina, Tuesdays 7-8pm. This lively, intermediate-level class is Dina's own particular brew of Folkloric, Cabaret, and Tribal Style bellydance, aka "Tribaret" in bellydance parlance. Dina has been perfecting her particular Gypsy Fusion style for a decade, while performing as a featured dancer at various events around the Northeast. She blends elements of Tribal and Cabaret bellydance with Folkloric Gypsy dances from the Middle East, Central Asia, and Europe for an earthy and high-spirited dance experience. Class includes warmup, drills, choreography, and character work. We dance to many exciting world music flavors, including Greek, Turkish, Spanish, Arabic, Romany/Gypsy, and various modern fusions. Be ready for some high energy combos, shimmies, and rhythm techniques such as the Turkish 9/8, zill playing, and more! Please bring a long, full, Gypsy style skirt to each class. "Belly-robics": Basic Bellydance Workout with Dina, Wednesdays 7-8pm. Want to do some sweating and get in shape? Want to drill those basic bellydance moves until you know them inside and out? Want to stretch and strengthen your body so that you are a better-conditioned dancer all around? Then this class is for you. Dina drills the bellydance basics in aerobic-style combinations that are easy and fun to follow. (She also breaks down each movement until everyone gets it thoroughly.) Move your hips to dance club mixes and techno-Gypsy music, while also getting a full warm-up and cool-down to take you through the complete conditioning experience. This is a perfect class for beginners who want to go over basic technique, or for any dancer who just wants to drill and work out! Drum Rhythms & Drum Jam, Thursdays 7-9pm Join drummers Brian and Dina LeDuke of Ensemble Davuli in learning the basic rhythms that drive Middle Eastern music and dance. You will learn how to play Arabic rhythms such as beledi, ayub, maqsum, and saiidi; also some North African rhythms, and a few Turkish and Balkan rhythms for a little bit of a challenge. Drummers, impress your friends at your next drum circle around the bonfire. Dancers, become better acquainted with the rhythms you are dancing to, especially when working with live music. Class is multi-level, and attention is paid to individual needs. Please bring your own drums; we also have a few for sale, or to borrow if needed. The one-hour Rhythms class will be followed by an hour of free and open Drum Jam around our "virtual bonfire", at which all are welcome. American Cabaret Fundamentals and Repertoire with Sabrina, Saturdays 1-3pm Learn the art of bellydance from the consummate professional bellydancer! Sabrina, House Dancer and Bellydance Production Manager at The Middle East Restaurant in Cambridge, explores various stylizations and interpretations of the Art of Bellydance from a Cabaret perspective. Sabrina is proficient in many styles, including Arabic, Modern Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, Pharaonic, and Fusion. Many aspects of bellydance performance are reviewed in each class, including hip work, isolations, floor work, drum solo, and props. Please bring your finger cymbals and veils to each and every class, and come dressed for a dance workout (yoga or gym attire, with a scarf tied around the hips) 1-2pm Fundamentals - Suitable for novice dancers as well as experienced dancers who are new to Sabrina, this class is fundamental but multi-level. It incorporates rhythmic limbering and movement rehearsal, movement vocabulary break-down, and bellydance isolations and techniques, that will prepare the student to bellydance within the broadest range of styles. 2-3pm Repertoire - This class assumes a basic level of understanding and ability to execute the movement vocabulary that has been introduced and drilled in the Fundamentals section. Repertoire introduces the experienced student to Sabrina's more sophisticated combinations and professional choreographies, for pieces intended for performance, including student showcases.
