Dina and Troupe Shivani dance in the marketplace, and TDG Band
plays at the evening hafla, with our special guest star "uncle"
Carmine Guida! Birka (www.birka.org) is a medieval marketplace
event put on annually by the Society for Creative Anachronism.
Birka is held at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester, NH and runs
from 9am-7pm. The hafla runs from 8-11pm. Tickets to Birka are
$15 for the day at the door. Period dress is required; see website for
details. (TDG is closed for the day.)


SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13:
NOUVEAU NOIR ROMANTIQUE WITH TEMPEST

Celebrate romance on Valentine's Day weekend with a Darkly
Dramatic twist! Explore Nouveau Noir Bellydance with Tempest,
whose specialty is a style of dance that reflects the art and society of
the romantic turn of the (last) century. Her inspiration comes from
silent films, vaudeville, Denishawn, art nouveau, art deco, and the
Orientalist craze. Students will learn combinations that capture the
elegant form, fluid movement, and dramatic stylings of these eras;
class is taught in a format that enables students to transform these
combinations into their own personal choreographies. Tempest's
afternoon workshop will be followed by an informal participant
showcase in the evening.
Workshop: 4:00 - 5:30pm, $35
Participant Showcase: 7:00 - 8:30pm, $5 donation

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21: BELLYDANCE SPECTACULAR
AT THE SAHARA WITH THE ED MELIKIAN ENSEMBLE

Take another magic carpet ride with Ed and the band, and beat the
winter blues
with bellydance! Experience the divine dancing of
Sabrina, Dina, and Rabia in
three Oriental Cabaret shows... dance to
the sweet sounds of Turkish, Armenian,
and Arabic music played by
Ed's Ensemble... and enjoy the food, folks and fun in
the Sahara's
beautiful Art Deco environment. There will be plenty of open floor
dancing between acts, and there is no cover charge (tipping is greatly
appreciated :). The bar and kitchen will be open for drinks and food
service;
the Sahara serves excellent Middle Eastern cuisine of all
types. Restaurant
reservations are strongly recommended because
tables fill up quickly. Last time
it was standing room only, so don't
miss out, call and reserve your spot near
the dance floor!

TDG teachers & students perform at the Quintavia Hafla in
Bolton, MA. Prices and times TBA. (TDG is closed for the day.)



SATURDAY MAY 22: TDG'S SPRING HAFLA

The Dancing Gypsy Spring Hafla! Turkish Style Entrances and
Finales Workshop with Phaedra from 3-5pm; performances and
hafla from 7-10pm. Phaedra's workshop concentrates on the
exhilarating and lively entrances and karshilama finales of the
Turkish-style show. Topics include travelling steps; the stylistic
differences between Turkish and Arabic shows; zilling with
karshilama, and a short choreography. Hafla includes dinner buffet,
performances, open floor dancing to the music of The Dancing
Gypsy Band, and more.
